The first ever Brindleyplace Family Festival made a splash this weekend with record crowds turning out to make the most of the free activities and watch the annual Dragonboat Race.

The family-friendly event attracted over 16,500 people to Brindleyplace on Saturday 16 June, with many attracted by the annual Dragonboat Race which saw businesses from across Birmingham take to the canal in an attempt to raise vital funds for Cure Leukaemia.

Alongside headline sponsor Deutsche Bank, teams from Harvey Nash, Kind Consultancy, Jaguar Landrover, Deutsche Bank, The Binding Site, Clearwater International, Birmingham City Football Club, Bromford Industries, the ICC, Interserve, KPMG, All Bar One, , Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, , GVA and Cure Leukaemia all took part.

The team from Harvey Nash ‘Usain Boat’ were the overall winners with a fantastic speed of 58.63 seconds, while Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce took home the ‘Paddle of Pity’ after coming last in their respective heats.

Rebecca Halbert, Marketing Manager at Brindleyplace, said: “The first Brindleyplace Family Festival was a huge success and it was great to see so many families getting involved in activities across the estate.

“From the energy of the swing, steet and tap dance workshops from DanceXchange to the calm environment of our inflatable ‘James in the Giant Peach’ story corner, there really was something for everyone and we hope everyone had as much fun as we did throughout the day.

“The teams involved in this year’s Dragonboat Race are still busy fundraising and, combined with the support of the public at the Family Festival, we’re hoping to raise a significant amount for Cure Leukaemia again this year.”

Brindleyplace is now counting down to a summer of free events, including the Wimbledon screening and the Outdoor Film Festival which starts on Monday 16 July.
