Join students and staff from Birmingham City University (MA Arts & Education Practices at Birmingham School of Art) for a free drop-in workshop which engages and interacts with Niek van de Steeg’s artwork Structure de correction, table de débat (c. 2000).
MA Arts & Education Practices students invite you to critique how creative education is delivered and received; and to reimagine how it could be taught by artists as life-long learning within the gallery and in the world.

Join artist-educator Sarah Hamilton-Baker as she leads families on a creative trail through Ikon’s exhibition.
This interactive experience encourages families and younger visitors to explore art and ideas together. Use your detective skills to discover new artworks and investigate details throughout the exhibition, while enjoying drawing, collage and mini-modelling activities.
Friendship and Onomatopoeia: Participatory art in action

Join students and staff from Birmingham City University (MA Fine Art at Birmingham School of Art) for a free drop-in workshop which engages and interacts with Niek van de Steeg’s artwork Structure de correction, table de débat (c. 2000).
MA Fine Art students respond to Ikon’s exhibition and its theme of friendship, exploring this theme as a layered and dynamic experience. Working across drawing, collage and typography and using the framework of onomatopoeia, the students reimagine friendship as an evolving, participatory act.
Clipping the Ikon
Friday 21 February, 2-7pm

Join us as we light up Ikon – with free creative workshops and performances during the day (2-5pm) and a candle-lit, ceremonial ‘clipping’ of Ikon Gallery as the sun sets (5-7pm).
The day begins with a wreath and costume-making workshop with Mariana Novotna. Participants contribute to decorating a costume and headdress for the final performance. Led by Birmingham-based Czech artist Tereza Bušková, Clipping the Ikon revives a centuries-old tradition in which ‘clipping’ means to form a human chain around a sacred building or place.
