the blossoming of the beautiful cherry trees in Oozells Square and to celebrate the pretty pink petals, we’ve got lots of activities planned!

We’ll be kicking things off by asking you to show us your photos! From the moment the first bud is spotted, we want you to get creative and tag us in your Instagram posts. Our favourites will be recognised from time to time with spot prizes and towards the end of the season we’ll be picking a selection which will be mounted, framed and hung in the receptions of our office buildings and the entrance of Ikon Gallery. Cherry Blossom Day
On Sunday 23rd March from noon, we’ll be holding our annual Cherry Blossom Day! From painting the blossoms on easels in Oozells Square, to printmaking and an art picnic, Ikon Gallery will be adopting the Japanese ‘hanami’ theme with art activities for the whole family to get involved in.
X, 10 Brindleyplace will be the venue for a small Cherry Blossom market with Japanese-inspired craft and fabric stalls selling gifts.
Our event partner, the National Trust, will be conducting a cherry blossom ‘trail’ starting from Central Square. Collect a trail sheet from their stand and follow the clues to find all the letters which spell out a blossom inspired word.
Children will also be able to take inspiration from the beautiful blossom trees and create a blooming beautiful mother day’s card, or any other card of their choosing. Materials provided free of charge.
At 3:00 pm, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, will perform at their fourth Cherry Blossom concert, playing sounds inspired by nature. The music for this special event will follow the life cycle of a tree – from using living trees and plants as instruments, to utilising the refined sound of the violin. Carrying on the ‘hanami’ (picnic theme) a street food truck will be serving yummy Japanese rice bowls, Katsu curries, and bao buns. The lovely restaurants in Oozells Square and further afield will be open offering delicious treats too.
Recycling Initiative
On March 18th, National Recycling Day, we will be launching our ‘Bring back the blossom’ recycling initiative in collaboration with Greenzone. We will be asking everyone to collect cans and then, during Recycling Week in September, we will unveil a giant repurposed blossom sculpture in Oozells Square.
So, there’s lots to look forward to and get involved with in the coming months. We hope to see you snapping away and joining us for what are sure to be some fun, artistic events!
