The Gift of Giving: Unwrapping the Health Benefits of Generosity During Christmas

We all know that Christmas is a time when generosity takes centre stage, but did you know that the act of giving during Christmas offers amazing health benefits too? Let's unwrap the numerous ways in which giving can positively impact your health.

Improving Mental Health

The act of giving promotes a sense of purpose and fulfilment, counteracting the stress associated with the hustle and bustle of the season. The act of giving triggers the release of serotonin and dopamine, increasing feelings of happiness and pleasure. Whether you’re surprising a loved one with a thoughtful gift or participating in charitable activities, the joy derived from giving contributes to an overall elevated mood, which also enhances immune function! This year Brindleyplace will be making donations to three local charities Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Choir with No Name and the Ladywood Project. Additionally, we will be supporting the Brumwish initiative, working in conjunction with Thrive Together Birmingham to deliver toys to children across the city.

Strengthening Social Bonds

Christmas is a time for gathering with friends and family, the act of giving strengthens these social connections. Strengthening relationships and fostering a sense of community have been linked to improved mental health and a greater sense of belonging. Positive social interactions contribute to emotional well-being and provide a support system during challenging times, hence the dramatic increase in social prescribing today. Celebrating the strong sense of community that exists amongst our tenants at Brindleyplace, we have Choir With No Name performing alongside the Brindley Christmas tree in Central Square on Thursday 7 December from 5:00pm. The Choir’s Founder, Marie Benton, won a Pride of Britain Award last month, empowering homeless and marginalised people to build brighter futures by singing together.

Encouraging Physical Activity

Christmas often involves busy activities such as shopping, decorating, and participating in community events. These activities promote increased physical activity which benefits cardiovascular health, contributing to overall health. So, after the carols, head to Ikon gallery for the festive Winter Craft Market from 5:30 – 8:30pm. Enjoy a unique Christmas shopping experience with over 50 stalls to browse from local makers, designers and artists, selling products such as jewellery, homeware, prints, cards and unique gifts.

Christmas generosity also creates lasting memories. These memories, filled with warmth and connection, can be a source of joy and comfort throughout the year. Brindleyplace provides the perfect environment to enjoy wonderful festivities, make memories and feel all the incredible health benefits mentioned, so be sure to add these dates to your diary;
