Ditch the car!

As one of the city’s premier business and leisure destinations, Brindleyplace is committed to reducing the impact of car journeys to and from the estate.

With World Car Free Day taking place on 22 September, the estate is gearing up to support people who can leave their car at home that day and take the opportunity to travel into work using alternative, less polluting and more sustainable methods of transport.

Leaving their car at home is easy as Brindleyplace already offers personal transport options that include Brompton bike hire, Voi scooter hire, a dedicated tram stop, plus bike parking and maintenance facilities.

The estate also benefits from excellent walking and cycling routes via the canal network – so it’s never been easier to ditch the car.

One business actively supporting ‘World Car Free Day’ is Brindley’s newest independent business – Gorilla Coffee Café.

James Connolly, Owner of Gorilla Coffee Café, said: “Encouraging people to consider cycling to work is such a simple solution to so many challenges in society both environmentally and personally. If World Car Free Day can get even a handful of people to swap their car for their bike or walking, then it will be worth it.”

Another benefit of cycling to work is that it can promote someone’s overall wellbeing.

Laura Butcher, Brindleyplace Wellness Consultant, commented: “Swapping driving to work for walking or cycling has incredible health benefits for both us and the environment.

“Exercise increases our happy hormone serotonin, and improves our sleep which helps reduce levels of depression and anxiety. Walking and cycling are particularly good forms of exercise as they are low intensity and can help cut your risk of heart disease by up to 50 per cent.”

Gorilla Coffee Café is inviting everyone across the estate to join them at their breakfast event from 7.30 – 9.00am on  22 September, and get tips from other cyclists on how to drive less and help create a culture where people ditch the car more often.
