By Matt Long - Another new and sustainable feature of Brindleyplace came online recently, in the shape of new EV charging points at three buildings.
The new electric vehicle charging points allow those who drive on-site to recharge their vehicles while at work or attending a meeting. The charging points will also be available to charge commercial vehicles servicing the estate.
The estate team has installed 12 EV chargers in total, with four each at 3 Brindleyplace, 4 Brindleyplace and the Oozells Building.
The new chargers will help meet current demand and contribute to the 4,000 new public charging points required throughout the Midlands every year between now and 2030.
Promoting electric vehicle use is a key response to the climate emergency declared in Birmingham and across the world. A ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars comes into force in 2030 and local councils are already introducing measures to encourage motorists to choose lower-pollution vehicles, such as the Clean Air Zone in Birmingham.
In the past, Brindleyplace was a key industrial location for businesses that needed to trade effectively and transport their goods efficiently. With the new EV chargers installed, Brindleyplace is once more setting the pace for other commercial estates and buildings in the city to play their part in meeting local demand for more sustainable transportation.
This move follows on from other sustainability and wellbeing initiatives, including the new x+why space taking space at Foundry, the new name for 6 Brindleyplace. To underscore the building’s green credentials, Foundry is also working towards the RICS-accredited SKA Silver rating, demonstrating an active commitment to sustainability.
All of this activity is just one part of the estate’s commitment to sustainability. Others, such as widespread mixed recycling of paper, card, plastics and glass, have taken place for many years, as well as the use of electric vehicles on the estate itself. Solar panels are also currently being assessed for their suitability.
What we know for sure is that more and more similar initiatives will be coming online in the future – watch this space.
