Experience Ikon from home

Although Ikon Gallery may be temporarily closed until further notice, their digital channels remain open meaning you can still experience the gallery from the comfort of your own home!

If you didn’t get a chance to visit the current exhibition by Judy Watson, you can experience a digital walkthrough which includes new paintings, video and sculptural pieces. Also make sure you check out this interview with Judy supplied by Queensland Ballet to get an insight into her artistic background and inspiration.

A pioneer of public art, Birmingham-born John Newling’s current exhibition exemplifies his strong environmental position and pushes at the boundaries of what defines art. Watch below to experience the digital walkthrough of Dear Nature, and this interview with John, taking a look at his studio and discussing his current works.

Yhonnie Scarce’s exhibition might be postponed, but you can view a video from Yhonnie’s workshop showing you how she creates her hand blown glass work. Working with glass, she explores the political nature and aesthetic qualities of the material – in particular corresponding to the crystallisation of desert as a result of British Nuclear tests on her homeland during 1956-63.

Ikon also have something to keep the little ones busy whilst at home with their Ikon Activity Packs. Their Family Saturday has also turned digital, offering you free arts activities to take part in at home each week, just keep an eye on their social media pages!

The Early Years – KS1 pack includes practical activities including mark making, finger painting and collage inspired by their current exhibition of works by Judy Watson and John Newling. These activities require few materials and can be created with objects you can find around your home and garden.

The Art Explorer activity pack can contribute towards achieving a Discover Arts Award Certificate (to learn more click here). Use Judy Watson and John Newling’s exhibition images on the Ikon website as inspiration, and don’t forget to share your creations with them and tag @ikongallery on social media.
