The season of goodwill is the perfect time to be part of the movement towards a more sustainable future and at Brindleyplace we’re committed to doing all we can to ensure we make the world a greener place. - Reduce food waste and packaging
Buy only what you need, opt for loose fruits and vegetables, get creative with leftovers. Refill shops help reduce packaging waste and allow you to buy just the right amount.
- Use your own cup!
Enjoy your festive coffee in a reusable cup. Many coffee shops offer discounts when you use an eco-cup – saving money and reducing waste.
- Send Christmas Green-tings
Choose Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified cards. This guarantees they are produced ethically and sustainably. Also after Christmas, remember to recycle any cards you receive.
You can also send ‘virtual’ Christmas cards via email.
- Gift experiences, not things
Experiences make memorable gifts and reduce the demand for physical resources. Consider giving your time or purchasing an experience. Options include tickets to shows, concerts or events, restaurant reservations or gift cards. Planning a day out or preparing a homemade meal can also be wonderful gifts.
- Choose sustainable materials
When selecting gifts, consider their materials and sustainability. Opt for items made from recycled or FSC certified wood and paper. Avoid single-use plastics and look for Fairtrade or Organic-certified food and clothing. Buying second-hand items, such as vintage clothes, home furnishings, or refurbished technology, can also be a great way to give sustainably.
- Minimise gift packaging
Reduce waste by choosing gifts with minimal or no packaging. Shopping locally can help reduce the need for bags and if you do need to use shopping bags always take reusable ones.
- Master eco-friendly wrapping
Avoid plastic ribbons, tape and foil-backed or glittery wrapping papers. Explore tape free wrapping methods like furoshiki, a Japanese method which uses cloth rather than paper and can be brought out year after year.
- Go the extra mile this Christmas
Give a ‘Concern’ gift and make a difference. Donate to a charity like animal rescue, school uniforms or emergency food donations. These gifts reduce waste and transform lives for people living in poverty worldwide.
The choices you make in small items can make big changes to the environment, so remember to buy a natural wreath and recycle your Christmas tree after the festive season!
