Healthy planet, healthy you

The 8th – 16th June is ‘Green Week’ in the UK and World Environment Day takes place on the 5th June, celebrating environmental action and the power of governments, businesses and individuals to create a more sustainable world.

Brindleyplace is working to reduce Carbon across the estate via a number of initiatives and we have recently partnered with Greenzone to further enhance our sustainable actions.

Food waste is a significant issue in the UK, with far-reaching environmental and economic impacts. The UK throws away around 9.5 million tonnes of food waste every year. In an attempt to combat food waste across the estate, Brindley has implemented a Weightron system to measure the weight of waste generated by each tenant and the type of waste stream. This data allows Greenzone to collaborate with Brindleyplace to promote waste segregation and enhance recycling throughout the estate by providing education, training, and conducting site audits.

We already use solar panels, smart metres, air quality monitoring and state-of-the art software analysis to help reduce energy consumption, while waste materials are recycled and repurposed across the estate. All the buildings at Brindleyplace use state-of-the-art Demand Logic software to monitor and adjust energy consumption. To date, this has achieved year-on-year reductions in the amount of energy used by the estate.

Approximately 5.4 million tonnes of paper and cardboard packaging waste are produced in the UK every year. Brindleyplace has an onsite Portapacker to bale cardboard and paper for efficient recycling collections. These types of recycling efforts contribute to sustainability, reduce waste, and support our communities. Let’s continue to recycle paper and cardboard to protect our environment!

Brompton bike hire, EV charging and electric maintenance buggies also help to reduce reliance on fossil fuels for visitors, tenants and staff alike.

Rooftop hives are installed at 3 Brindleyplace to bring more pollination to the city centre. These provide a home to more than 80,000 honeybees, and the honey they make is sold by Ethos Florist to raise money for the Ladywood Project benefitting the Ladywood community.

Going ‘green’ not only benefits the planet but also improves your health. Here are some practical steps to ‘go green’ for health.

Breathe Green

Use public transport, share lifts, bike, or walk instead of driving to reduce air pollution, leading to cleaner air and lower incidence of respiratory issues such as asthma and bronchitis. Grow indoor plants to improve indoor air quality by filtering out toxins and increasing oxygen levels.

Travel Green

Walking or biking instead of driving incorporates physical activity into your daily routine, improving cardiovascular health, and reducing the risk of obesity and related diseases. Spending time in natural settings can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Check out the Brindleyplace walking and exercise routes, . At Brindleyplace, we offer weekly yoga classes and bi-weekly massage sessions to our occupiers to support their wellness journey.

Eat Green

Consume organic produce to reduce exposure to pesticides and chemicals, leading to better overall health and lower risk of chronic diseases. Eating locally sourced and seasonal foods provide fresher, more nutrient-dense options, supporting a healthier diet. Growing your own food or maintaining a garden provides moderate exercise and exposure to nature, which has been shown to reduce stress and improve mood.

Buy Green

Buy from companies and brands that prioritise sustainability and ethical practices. Opt for products that are free from harmful chemicals, sustainably sourced, and environmentally friendly. Using eco-friendly cleaning and personal care products reduces exposure to harmful chemicals, which can decrease the risk of skin irritations, allergies, and long-term health issues like hormonal disruption or cancer.

Going green not only helps protect the environment but also offers numerous health benefits. From improving air quality to promoting physical activity and mental well-being, adopting eco-friendly practices contributes to a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle and planet!
