Nothing symbolises romance on Valentine’s Day like flowers. Whether it’s a bouquet of fresh flowers or a dozen traditional red roses, there’s no better way to express your love for that someone special in your life.
Independent florist Ethos has been selling the freshest and most fabulous flowers in Birmingham for 21 years, starting in a shop in Harborne before moving to Brindleyplace. Owner Mark Gribben is celebrating his 19th Valentine’s Day at the estate this year and says while it will certainly be different this year, a floral Valentine’s gift will be just as special.
Mark said: “Flowers are a universal sign for romance, and buying fresh flowers from a florist is the best way to make your loved ones’ day special. Buying from a florist shows that you’ve put some real thought into it and put a premium on quality, rather than a last minute dash to the supermarket.
“Valentine’s Day is always one of our biggest days of the year, and we have options to suit all budgets and preferences. Personally, the traditional red Freedom and Naomi roses are my favourites for this time of year, but we also do lots of mixed bouquets as well. For Valentine’s Day, we always recommend getting a hint of red, the colour of love, into your selection though.”
Ethos takes pride in stocking the freshest flowers possible, but to make sure people get the most out of their gifts it is vital that people take measures to care for them in the right way. Mark shared a few tips and the one thing you must not do to help them remain fresh for as long as possible.
He explained: “All of our flowers come hand-cut, but if you do have to cut them once at home it is important that you take some sharp scissors or preferably secateurs and cut them at an angle.
“It’s also vital that you change the water they sit in regularly too. It’s best not to leave your flowers in the same water for more than 48 hours to stop bacteria infecting the stems.
“The major mistake people make, especially at this time of year, is positioning your flowers close to a fireplace. With it being winter and trying to keep your home as warm as possible it is important that you place your flowers in a vase or similar in a cooler location away from any sources of heat.”
