Brindleyplace has been named a recipient of a prestigious award from The Birmingham Civic Society! It has been awarded the Peoples’ Choice 2020 Haywood Award for its progressive and historic connections, as well as its ability to bring different aspects of the city together in one place.
The award honours William Haywood, one of the founders of Birmingham Civic Society back in 1900 and one of the most influential leaders of the city in the early twentieth century. The award celebrates the people and projects that, like William Haywood himself, have had a dramatic and beneficial effect on the regeneration of the city.
Since it first opened in 1994, the combination of business, leisure and public space at Brindleyplace has made it both a unique as well as popular part of Birmingham and it is now regarded as an essential destination for the city. As one of the first large-scale, commercially-led mixed use developments outside of a capital city anywhere in the world it has also helped inspire similar developments around the UK and globally.

Brindleyplace is considered an exemplary redevelopment of a brown field site and has a compelling historic narrative linking back to the industrial revolution and the birth of inland waterways which enabled Birmingham to become the workshop of the world. The development’s modern re-imagining of this role has helped transform the city centre over the past two decades, bringing more people, investment and jobs to the city.”

Brindleyplace remains an up to date, fully managed estate that attracts more than four million visitors a year to its variety of bars, cafés and restaurants, contemporary art gallery, Ikon, and National SEA LIFE Centre. The estate has also recently been making improvements to its spaces and places to ensure they meet the future needs of occupiers, visitors and staff in both a Covid and post-Covid environment.
As a safe and secure destination, with staff on site 24 hours a day, the amount of open space in and around Brindleyplace, the high specification of the buildings and the hands-on management means the estate offers a unique proposition for everyone who works, lives and visits it. The estate is also home to a number of major employers, including Deutsche Bank, Natwest, Lloyds Banking Group, Deloitte and Avison Young, between them employing more than 10,000 staff.
