Brindleyplace Reveals Classic vs Modern Film Festival Line-Up

Large crowd outside in Brindleyplace, Birmingham.

Brindleyplace has revealed the line-up for this year’s eagerly anticipated outdoor Film Festival with Hollywood classic, Casablanca, and modern musicals La La Land and The Greatest Showman topping the list.

Taking place between 16 and 22 July, nine films will be shown in total, all of which will be free for the general public to attend. Evening screenings start at 6pm (7pm on Saturday) alongside two earlier showings at the weekend, starting at 3pm on Saturday and 2pm on Sunday.

The line-up was chosen by the public, with nearly 2,000 people voting online for their favourite modern or classic film. Proving it really is the biggest film of 2018; The Greatest Showman received the most votes overall and will be shown on Saturday 21 July at 6pm.

Rebecca Halbert, Marketing Manager at Brindleyplace, said: “With a classics vs modern theme, there really is something for everyone on this year’s line-up, including family favourites Mary Poppins and Back to the Future right through to the very recent Black Panther movie.

“The Brindleyplace Film Festival has become one of our most popular and highly anticipated events. It’s a great evening out on a summer night. Don’t forget to put the dates in your diary, and get here early – whatever the weather, the Film Festival always attracts a crowd.”

This year’s Film Festival will also see a series of short films by The Royal Society for Blind Children – one of the Brindleyplace charity partners – shown as trailers to raise awareness of the impact of sight loss on children’s lives. Various fundraising activities will also be taking place throughout the week including the arrival of an immersive van in Central Square.

Rob Cartwright, Head of Corporate at Royal Society for Blind Children, said: “We’re are thrilled to be one of Brindleyplace’s chosen charities this year. The Royal Society for Blind Children is working towards our ambition of reaching every blind child in the UK and the West Midlands is our first vital step on this journey. The region has one of the highest incidence of childhood sight loss in the country with over 3,700 children and young people under the age of 25 living with sight loss.

“The festival is an amazing opportunity to raise the profile of the life-changing support our local Family Workers offer to local blind children and their families from the moment they find out they are losing their sight.”

In addition to the Film Festival, Brindleyplace will also be screening all of the Wimbledon tournament on the outdoor screen in Central Square including the live finals on Saturday 9 July and Sunday 10 July.

A limited number of seat pads and bean bags will be available during the Film Festival, provided by Brindleyplace. Attendees are encouraged to bring along their own picnic blankets and arrive early to secure the best seating places.

Whilst most of the films are family-friendly, people are encouraged to check the timetable and certificated of films before heading to the Film Festival this summer, so as not to be disappointed.
