Energy saving and consumption

With Brindleyplace’s aim to continue going green this year the Brindleyplace newsletter is maintaining its regular green slot. This month we are looking at energy and energy consumption. Green issues are such hot topics in the press at the moment and here at Brindleyplace we can give you some top tips on how to save energy within your home and businesses.

Remembering to switch everyday appliances off within your home could save you money and contribute to you doing your bit for the environment.

Our top tips are:
• Switching off electrical items within your home e.g. televisions, hi-fi systems, and phone chargers on a daily basis.

• When going on holiday, switch off large appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines. Also, if not used every day to switch these off too.

• When working within offices, try to remember to switch off lights within meeting rooms when not being used, and any appliances such as kettles/toasters within the kitchens.

• Also, switching off your computer when you are not at your desk for long periods of time could help reduce wasting unwanted electricity.

Here are some facts to show how effective recycling can be and how it can help to fuel our everyday appliances and electrical items within our homes.  The energy saved from recycling one bottle will:

 - Power a 100 watt light bulb for almost an hour
 - Power a computer for 25 minutes
 - Power a colour TV for 20 minutes
 - Power a washing machine for 10 minutes

1 recycled tin can would save enough energy to power a television for 3 hours.  1 recycled plastic bottle would save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours.  Emissions from televisions, set-top boxes, video recorders and computers left idle amount to about three million tonnes of CO2 a year.
