Hippo the Water Saver

As well as the many recycling initiatives we are using at Brindleyplace, we are also trying to highlight the importance of conservation, in particular water conservation.

One of the areas we are looking at improving is the water wasted each time we flush our toilets! About 33 per cent of our water supply is needlessly wasted each time a person flushes the toilet, so over the period of a year this equates to around 6000 litres per person. If your company has around 400 employees, this equates to the loss of an Olympic sized swimming pool of water per year!

One way in which we are looking to improve this is by trialing the installation of ‘Water Hippos’ on a number of the toilets in the common areas of our buildings. The Hippo itself is a durable yet flexible Polyethlene box which opens up and fits under the water in the cistern, so when the water is flushed, water contained within the Hippo is saved and not flushed away. We are hoping the trial will be a success and, if it is, we plan to install the Hippos on a much larger scale which really will make a huge environmental saving.
