Founded in 1868 as ‘The All England Croquet Club’\, which later became The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club\, Wimbledon is widely regarded as the world’s most prestigious tennis tournament and it is certainly the oldest. DESCRIPTION:Join Ikon for a glass of wine to celebrate the opening of the new exhibitions by John Flaxman and Timur Novikov on Wednesday 13th February\, 6–8pm (free event)    John Flaxman: Line to Contour    Ikon presents the work of John Flaxman (1755–1826)\, a leading exponent of British Neoclassicism\, renowned during his lifetime for minimally drawn illustrations of stories from ancient Greece.    Curated by eminent art historian David Bindman\, this exhibition consists almost entirely of drawings and plaster models for sculpture from UCL Art Museum at University College London.    Timur Novikov    This is a comprehensive exhibition of work by Russian artist Timur Novikov (1958–2002)\, co-curated by his step-daughter Masha Novikova-Savelyeva. Very influential in Russia during the 1980s and 1990s\, Novikov is best known for his distinct style of appliqué – whereby fabric motifs are sewn onto larger pieces of cloth – at once formally simple and beguiling.

SUMMARY:Dragonboat Festival
DESCRIPTION:The annual Dragonboat Festival will be returning to Brindleyplace on Saturday 22nd June in a bid to find out which local business can face the elements and be crowned winner of the popular charity race.    The festival\, sponsored by Deutsche Bank and supporting HelpHarryHelpOthers is regarded by many as the fundraising event for the business community in Birmingham – and entries are now open for people wishing to take part.    The highly-competitive race will take place on the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal at Brindleyplace\, with rowers competing in a series of heats in traditional Chinese longboats from Pitcher and Piano\, The Water’s Edge in Brindleyplace\, to the winning post at The NIA.    In addition to the racing action along the canal\, there is plenty of entertainment for spectators and supporters including the popular Chinese Lion Dancers\, live music\, a bouncy castle\, face painting\, a craft market\, street entertainment and event hosting courtesy of Free Radio. DESCRIPTION:Saturday 8 December sees the return of the annual Santas run and stroll event\, where crowds of people come together – all dressed as Father Christmas – to help raise money for Acorns Children’s Hospice.    Join hundreds of people taking part in the event\, running\, skipping\, walking and jogging the route in support of local life limited children. There are two routes to choose from – 2km and 5km – and the money raised enables Acorns to continue providing support to the family 24 hours a day\, 365 days a year. SUMMARY:Brindleyplace Presents Christmas
DESCRIPTION:The festivities at Brindleyplace begin on Tuesday 4th December with the big Christmas light switch on. To help everyone get in the Christmas spirit\, pupils from local schools will be bringing their best singing voices along and encouraging everyone to join in with some traditional tunes at a Brindleyplace carol service.    There will be plenty of tasty treats on offer including mince pies and mulled wine – not to mention a special visit from Father Christmas and his elves! Taking place from 5.30pm – 7pm\, there will also be the opportunity for visitors to remember a loved one by lighting a floating candle in the Brindleyplace fountains.    The carol service will be led by Georgina Moseley\, the mother of Harry Moseley who tragically died from a brain tumour at the age of 11. Harry spent his last months raising money for cancer research and his huge efforts have resulted in more than £1 million being raised and a charity set up in his name. The carol service is open to everyone and will be raising funds for the ‘Help Harry Help Others’ charity.    &nbsp;

Acorns provides care and support to over 630 children and 880 families. There is no charge to use the services but it costs £750 per child per day. SUMMARY:Bandstand Marathon
DESCRIPTION:Recognised by LOCOG as part of the biggest closing event for London 2012\, the Bandstand Marathon will see over 500 events in bandstands and other open spaces happening across the UK including The Water's Edge Bandstand in Brindleyplace.    Taking place on 9th September 2012 between 1pm – 5pm\, this will be the largest Bandstand Marathon to date\, a truly national event linking local communities and London 2012.    All four acts for the Bandstand Marathon taking place at Brindleyplace on Sunday 9th September have now been confirmed. Steve Maitland will be starting the proceedings at 1pm with his tribute to Michael Buble. Steve was one of very first acts and still one of the best tributes since starting in 2007. He has had a number of sell out theatre shows throughout the UK.    Following up Steve's smooth swing performance\, Kiki O'Connell will take to the floor at 2pm.    Never before have you met a girl like Kiki O'Connell\, classically beautiful\, startlingly intelligent and mischievously witty; only one of her kind was made. This intriguing new talent confidently imprints her music with a soulful\, sensual\, sultry sound and utterly beautiful lyrics that narrate a relatable story. From her first note sung to the last\, Kiki’s inimitable honeyed tone will draw you into her world. Whatever she's singing\, Kiki’s beauty\, class and composure make for a magnetic performance.    The Enigma Brass Ensemble will follow Kiki from 3pm\, a group of musicians based in the West Midlands with extensive experience of performing a wide variety of music. The ten piece brass ensemble\, playing in the format made popular by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and subsequently London Brass\, recently played as the Olympic Torch left Birmingham at 5.30am - a very early performance!    Last but not least\, Trio Rosbifs round off the afternoon from 4pm with a selection of swing from the 1920s\, 30s and 40s and original\, modern gypsy jazz. DESCRIPTION:The Life Boat is a 5 metres long with four rib sections strung together with hammocks. It is a slow and contemplative ride destined to create a beautiful and engaging atmosphere as it turns in gentle circles.    Participants are greeted by a member of the ICD crew and invited to get their bearings at stations to the North\, South\, East and West of the structure. At these stations there are provocations with regard to migration\, ethics\, trade and sustainability aiming to create a beautiful and compelling atmosphere: arresting peoples attention and enticing them to engage in a transformative experience.

DESCRIPTION:The 28th annual Birmingham International Jazz and Blues Festival will take place across the city this summer.    From 6 to 15 July\, more than 170 performances will take place in 70 venues\, including Brindleyplace\, during the popular festival that attracted 96\,000 visitors in 2011!    Attracting the biggest names in Jazz and Blues\, the festival will showcase musicians from the USA\, France\, Czech Republic\, Germany\, Poland\, Hungary\, Italy\, China and of course\, from across the UK.    Greg Abate with John Patrick Trio    Born in Fall River\, Massachusetts\, in 1947\, saxophonist/flautist Greg Abate is now based in Rhode Island where he is an adjunct professor of Jazz Studies at Rhode Island College\, though he is also much in demand for jazz festivals world-wide. Having graduated from Berklee\, Greg spent his early years as a professional playing lead alto with the Ray Charles Orchestra. His first CD under his own name was released on Candid in 1991 and\, 13 years and a dozen albums later\, his 2004 release\, Evolution\, garnered Grammy nominations in four categories. Now established as a festival favourite\, Greg again brings his distinctive saxophone style to Birmingham.    John Patrick’s piano playing has graced the performances of many American stars who have visited the country since the 1960s. For many years John fronted his own big band\, but he is at his best in a small group playing hardswinging modern jazz.    &nbsp;

Pat Giraud Trio    Pianist/Hammond organist Pat Giraud can look back on a full career of more than 40 years playing jazz. His music has taken him from big bands to his Harlem Jazz Trio to the role of accompanist. In particular his association with singer Marc Ogeret took him on his first foreign tour – to the USSR in 1974.    Pat Giraud has also toured to Cuba\, Canada\, Lithuania\, Romania and many African countries as well as playing top French festivals such as Bayonne\, Marcillac and Nice\, and first appeared at the Birmingham festival in 2010.

SUMMARY:Birmingham <br/>Jazz Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 28th annual Birmingham International Jazz and Blues Festival will take place across the city this summer.    From 6 to 15 July\, more than 170 performances will take place in 70 venues\, including Brindleyplace\, during the popular festival that attracted 96\,000 visitors in 2011!    Attracting the biggest names in Jazz and Blues\, the festival will showcase musicians from the USA\, France\, Czech Republic\, Germany\, Poland\, Hungary\, Italy\, China and of course\, from across the UK.    Shreveport Rhythm    Shreveport Rhythm\, founded in 2008\, is highly acclaimed by fans as Hamburg’s finest hot jazz and swing quartet. The experienced\, but still youthful\, musicians\, led by Helge Sachs’ saxophone and clarinet\, have developed their own fresh and entertaining style\, covering the best from hot jazz of 1920s through swing to some jive classics.

Friday 20th July - Inspector Gadjo    The Inspector Gadjo Trio takes the spirit and flavour of Gypsy Jazz and stirs in a cool helping of Bebop and Latin Jazz. With influences from Django Reinhardt to Kenny Burrell\, Charlie Parker to Antonio Carlos Jobim the group has been gaining momentum across the U.K after winning the prestigious Gypsy Idol competition at the 2009 International Gypsy Guitar Festival (as judged by Andreas Oberg). Formed in early 2009 by young jazz guitarist Will Barnes\, the musicians of Inspector Gadjo each bring an individual element to the group.

Friday 27th July - The Broombusters    The Broombusters deliver a unique fusion of blues and reggae\, rhythmic reggae basslines matched with gritty blues chords to create an original sound. The band takes influences from Bob Dylan\, Elmore James\, Jimi Hendrix and Muddy Waters\, combined with reggae and good old-fashioned rock’n’roll. Leading the five-piece Broombusters is the charismatic Charlie ‘Wolfman’ Sylvester from the late 1970s disco soul band the J.A.L.N. Band which\, managed by Pete Waterman\, toured Europe for over 25 years\, had several chart successes and made many appearances on Top of the Pops.

Ben Poole Band    In the last two years Ben Poole has been regularly described as the most exciting  young blues guitarist to come out of the UK for a long time. Total Guitar magazine  named him as ‘the guitarist to watch out for in 2010’ and he fulfilled his ambition of working with US guitarist/singer/songwriter Richie Kotzen by touring with him in 2009. This was then followed up by the release of his five-track EP Everything I Want\, produced by noted guitarist Bernie Torme.

SUMMARY:The Big Brum Night Walk
DESCRIPTION:On Friday 5th October Birmingham will be host to the first ever Big Brum Night Walk!    Supported by Unity Bank the event will start at Brindleyplace. The night will see hundreds of people take to the streets of Birmingham on a 10 mile walk to help Big Issue vendors on their journey away from homelessness. The Big Issue Foundation will provide a well signed route\, walk guides plus entertainment and a few refreshments along the route to keep you motivated.    The Big Brum Night Walk is a chance for people from all walks of life to get together for one night and see Birmingham in a whole new light. Walkers will be raising funds to directly support homeless and vulnerably housed vendors in the Birmingham area.    Registration is £20 (Early Bird £15). DESCRIPTION:Brindleyplace supported by Broad Street BID will be bringing all things hot and spicy to the city with the second annual Birmingham Chilli Festival on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th July.    The festival returns as part of Food Fest and is guaranteed to get temperatures rising with a wide range of stalls offering chilli-related produce and food to eat on the day from across the globe.    The popular festival will also feature live cooking and cocktail demonstrations from the restaurants around Brindleyplace\, street entertainment\, tempestuous tango performances\, and live music as part of the Birmingham International Jazz and Blues Festival.    The much anticipated chilli eating competition is the festival finale at 3.30pm and will see contestants battle it out to be crowned the 2012 Chilli Conqueror and win a hot prize! DESCRIPTION:A brand new dance extravaganza - Home - will be coming to Brindleyplace in April as part of International Dance Festival Birmingham (IDFB) 2012.    Based around the themes of home\, identity and belonging\, it is one of IDFB’s most innovative participatory projects to date and is part of the Cultural Olympiad in the West Midlands. From 23 April to 13 May\, a total of 1\,000 people will dance on doormats\, in ‘pop-up’ performances in city centre locations.    The Brindleyplace performances will be on Saturday 28 at 3.15pm and Sunday 29 April from 12pm to 4.00pm in Central Square. Sunday 29 April is International Dance Day\, and in addition to watching live performances\, there will be opportunities for people to participate in Creative Workshops led by professional dance instructors and theatre director Andy Brunskill. DESCRIPTION:Each year the Great Daffodil Appeal raises much-needed funds to help Marie Curie Nurses care for people with terminal cancer and other illnesses.    On Saturday 17 March Marie Curie will be taking over Birmingham with their collecting teams to get as many people as possible wearing daffodils. The team will be in Brindleyplace alongside a capella show chorus\, The Belles of Three Spires who will be performing at The Water's Edge bandstand. SUMMARY:Dragonboat Festival
DESCRIPTION:The annual Dragonboat Festival will be returning to Brindleyplace for its 13th year this summer in a bid to find out which local business can face the elements and be crowned winner of the popular charity race.    Taking place on Saturday 16th June on Birmingham’s Fazeley Canal\, 22 teams from the city’s business community will compete against each other in traditional 40 ft long Chinese dragonboats. The teams will be pitching their rowing skills on a course that runs from Pitcher and Piano at The Water’s Edge in Brindleyplace to the finishing post at the NIA.    All in aid of a good cause\, the high-speed competition will raise money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital cancer unit to help mark the hospital’s 150th anniversary. Last year’s event\, which supported the Children’s Hospital End of Life Care Team\, raised a total of £38\,000.    Sponsored for the second year by Deutsche Bank\, the majority of teams have now been filled\, with competitors including last year’s winner\, West Midlands Fire Service and the best fancy dress winner\, No. 5 Chambers.    If you are not taking part in the race but would like to join in with the festivities there is plenty more to enjoy including live music\, a craft market\, traditional Chinese lion dancers\, art and craft workshops for the children\, street entertainment\, event hosting courtesy of radio station Free Radio and of course cheering on the teams! DESCRIPTION:Spin to Cure Diabetes is a corporate team challenge in aid of type 1 diabetes research. City workers in Birmingham are being invited to enter a team of five to push their bodies to the limit over eight minute interval sprints on a static bike during their lunch break.    The Birmingham event\, is one of many that will take place across Britain this summer. As the challenge event proved extremely successful in both Australia and Canada\, JDRF now invite people across the UK to rise to the challenge. SUMMARY:Local Produce Market
DESCRIPTION:Starting on June 24th\, the Local Produce Market at Brindleyplace are held in Central Square between 10am-3pm on the last Friday of every month through to September.    The markets attract a wide range of local producers providing a fantastic choice of food and drink from fresh fruit and vegetables to delicious cakes and pastries.    Come along and chat with stall holders about their fresh produce to reignite and inspire new ideas. This year some of the Brindleyplace restaurants will provide recipes for the produce being sold to make it even easier to enjoy locally sourced ingredients. Why not bring along your own recipe for a chance to have it published on our Facebook page?
