During the past week Brindleyplace’s Environmental Management System (EMS) has been externally audited in line with the requirements of the international ISO 14001 standard to ensure ongoing compliance.
This is the second surveillance audit by a third party since being awarded the ISO 14001 badge. The standard is designed to address the delicate balance between mainitaining profitability and reducing environmental impact.
Lynsey Nolan, Environmental Manager, the internal audit team and onsite staff have been working hard since the the implementation of the Brindleyplace EMS to ensure that the estate not only maintains but also improves environmental performance.
In addition to the established operational and site procedures in areas such as waste management and recycling, energy management, site procurement and water management, new projects are also underway all of which have been recognised by the auditors who had “no hesitation in recommending continued [ISO14001] certification.”
Lynsey Nolan who was promoted to Environmental Manager last year comments:
“I’m delighted that Brindleyplace has retained the ISO14001 standard for environmental management. The Green Team work incredibly hard and together with feedback from tenants we are working on some exciting new projects. Continual improvement of our environmental management systems is at the heart of our policies and these new projects will not only benefit the environment but also provide much needed cost savings for tenants.”
New projects include:
Water – Hines-Moorfield, the owners of the Brindleyplace Estate agreed to commission a feasibility study to investigate the possibility of drilling for water through the car park basement of a managed building. If successful this will allow Brindleyplace to source it’s own water supply at much more competitive rates. This project is in its early stages and investigations are still ongoing.
Solar power – Last year the team began researching the possibility of introducing solar panels as a long term investment allowing Brindleyplace to benefit from both energy and carbon saving. Subsequent government changes on Feed in Tariffs have resulted in further investigation being required on this project.
Waste – the team are currently in discussion with a number of companies to try to identify better solutions for disposal of food waste. This is particularly important as waste taxes continue to rise and Brindleyplace generates over 10 tonnes of food waste per week.
