Grit and ‘Bear’ It

Early Christmas shoppers enjoying the unseasonably mild weather could be forgiven for being surprised to see a gritter making its way down Broad Street last Friday. But the appearance of the vehicle was nothing to do with a sudden change in temperature, instead, employees from Amey were hauling it from Brindleyplace to Centenary Square for charity.

The efforts of the twelve-strong crew were well rewarded as a grand total of £11,085.55 was raised for Children in Need through the Grit and Bear It event – with more still coming in. The total was a combination of donations from staff and other individuals, pledges from suppliers and contractors and a £3,000 match funding donation from the Amey Foundation, Amey’s charitable arm.

Amey, the company which works in partnership with Birmingham City Council to maintain and manage the city’s roads, invested in a fleet of brand new gritters to keep the city’s roads moving safely this winter.

But with the mild November keeping frost and snow at bay, staff from Amey decided to use one of the gritters for another good cause – and raise some cash for the popular charity.

A team of twelve gritter drivers, more used to heading out under cover of darkness to keep the city’s roads clear while residents are tucked up in bed, harnessed themselves to the nine tonne vehicle and pulled it along the city’s entertainment mile.

The fleet of 25 gritters, has been on standby since the beginning of October while a team of specialists monitors the weather, ready to send out crews when needed.

Anyone who would like to sponsor the Amey team can still do so at: http://www.justgiving.com/Amey-Children-In-Need.

Edmunds Get Street Smart

Edmunds restaurant will once again be taking part in the national StreetSmart campaign to help raise funds and awareness for local homeless charities.

StreetSmart, supported by Deutsche Bank, simply involves restaurants placing a small card on each table which explains that if the diner wishes to add a voluntary £1 to their bill, then this will be donated to a local charity.

Last year Birmingham’s StreetSmart restaurants raised £7,000 for local homeless charities including St Basils, who work with young homeless aged 16 – 25 yrs.

Since the StreetSmart campaign was established in 1998, it has raised over £4.7million for the homeless.

The 2011 StreetSmart campaign will run from 1st November until 31st December. For more information visit www.streetsmart.org.uk.
