Christmas Cheer for Barnardo’s

Over the festive period, instead of sending traditional Christmas cards, Unity Trust Bank produced an e-card and made a donation of £150 in lieu of paper cards to Brindleyplace’s nominated charity – Barnardo’s Gift Tree Appeal.

Additionally, the money collected from ‘dress down Fridays’ totaling an extra £150 was used to buy presents for the appeal.

The Gift Tree Appeal initiative makes a difference to the lives of disadvantaged children across the Midlands who suffer abuse, discrimination and depravation and live in poverty, by ensuring they have at least one present to open on Christmas morning. This year over 1,200 presents were donated by local businesses including Brindleyplace based Unity Trust Bank.

Tracey Coleman, Service Support Worker for Barnardo’s comments: “We really appreciate all the hard work and generosity from companies such as Unity Trust Bank. The children were overwhelmed with the wonderful presents that were donated and the thought put in to them. The presents made a fantastic Christmas for all involved.”

Interested in fostering or adoption?

Deloitte Community Games

On Tuesday, 29 November, over 200 school children from across the West Midlands took part in a Community Games day organised by Deloitte at the National Indoor Arena (NIA) in Birmingham.

Sixteen schools joined together to try their hand at a number of Paralympic sports including Wheelchair Fencing, Sitting Volleyball, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Badminton and Goalball.

The schools were joined by guest Paralympic athletes, on-hand to introduce their respective sports and tell their stories. This included twenty-four year old champion gymnast Sarah Whitehouse, who trains in Wolverhampton, and Mickey Bushell, a wheelchair racer and silver medalist at the Beijing Paralympic Games and the Paralympic World Cup. The day also welcomed Paul Jacobs, a Rifleman of 2nd Battalion The Rifles from Stourbridge, who was awarded a George medal for his bravery after being blinded in a bomb attack while serving in Afghanistan. Paul has since become a patron and supporter of Goalball GB, a sport designed for visually impaired players.

Chris Loughran, Senior Partner of Deloitte in Birmingham, comments: “Our aim is to create a lasting legacy for communities in Birmingham by firstly raising awareness of Paralympic sports, encouraging children to try a new sport and connect with sports clubs in their local area and also introducing these children to inspirational role models. Deloitte has supported hundreds of disability athletes in the last five years and we know that for many of these professional athletes, their journey began with simply trying a new sport.”

Ikon 2

New details were announced recently about Ikon 2, the proposed new museum of contemporary art for Birmingham.

Ikon 2 will form part of the suggested Curzon Square, a new museum quarter situated in the Eastside district of the city. The plans for Curzon Square comprise a museum of photography, a new building for an existing national collection of art and Ikon 2. The historic Curzon Street Station would also be renovated as part of the proposals.

Adjacent to the intended HS2 rail terminal, Curzon Square will be transformative, in the way that Tate Modern has brought a vast swathe of London back to life. Its venues will be impressive architecture in a village-like critical mass of artistic attraction. A place for exhibitions, free to the public, performance, music and dance, film screenings and a wide variety of outdoor activities.

Planning for the Curzon Square museum quarter is well advanced with a feasibility study supported by Birmingham City Council, Arts Council England and Advantage West Midlands and a new art collection starting to form with a £1 million for acquisitions being made available by the Art Fund. It is proposed that the development pf Curzon Square be phased, with completion of the acheme by 2020.
