Celebrate Birmingham

City Inn Birmingham is urging people who live in or have visited the city to celebrate it and share what they think are its ‘hidden gems’ with the launch of a new website which is inviting British holiday-makers to forgo the coast and countryside and ‘go to town’ this summer.

The new micro-site, www.go-to-town.co.uk, includes information on the top events and things to do in each of the cities in which City Inn is located including Bristol, Glasgow, London, Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham.

Although a city break can be a breath of fresh air, it can take a few days to find all the best little places off the main tourist trail and who has better knowledge of a city than the people who live, work and play there. City Inn is bringing a modern twist to the old-fashioned but well-thumbed ‘visitors book’ to encourage its customers and people living locally to share their hidden gems with others new to the area.

People who have a special place in their hearts for Birmingham can upload their recommendations for events or places to visit, anything which they think adds sparkle to the city this summer, via the website which encourages people looking to book a break this year to take a trip to Birmingham.

The website has sections full of ideas for family, friends, work colleagues or loved-ones, with an elective mix of events and recommendations from where to go for a romantic meal to activities for kids from urban walks to waterside festivals.

Comments Jo Dunkley, Head of Group marketing at City Inn: “There are many reasons why cities beat countryside and beaches hands down as a summer destination as they are filled with culture and history and emit an exhilarating buzz from dusk until dawn. City Inn has chosen some of the UK’s finest cities to locate our hotels, including Birmingham which appealed to us because it is a contemporary, evolving city but which has an illustrious history and culture at its core. Although the site is already filled with some of the most popular places to go and things to do – we want people in Birmingham to add what they think are the hidden gems, for example a day of culture at the Custard Factory, Birmingham’s new arts and media quarter, to a fun day out for the family at Cadbury World, and we’ll be giving a range of fantastic prizes as an incentive for those who upload events. Also, we encourage people living in the area who are sharing their local knowledge to take a look around the site and see if they fancy an inspiring city break in one of our other hotels across the UK.”

Visitors to the site will be asked to rate the events and regular contributors will be awarded a host of ‘City Statuses’ from the ‘Greatest Weekly Contributor’ to the ‘Highest Rated Weekly Gem’ with weekly prizes for the highest rated event including afternoon tea for two or a three course meal for six friends at City Inn’s award-winning City Café restaurant.

Added Jo Dunkley: “We want people to upload all the things they love about these great cities, they could eventually be awarded the status of a true ‘City Guru’ and win a two night stay for two at City Inn’s newest hotel in Amsterdam, due to open early 2011.”
